Make-Up legend Dick Smith dies

Dick Smith, the Hollywood makeup legend who turned Linda Blair into a demon in The Exorcist and Marlon Brando into an aging mafia don in The Godfather, has died at the age of 92.

Smith's death, which came after a long illness, was announced by Smith's friend and fellow makeup artist Rick Baker on Thursday morning

"The master is no longer with us, but his work will live on,'' said Baker, a seven-time Oscar winner. "There will never be another like Dick. He and his work changed the industry.''

Rather than masks or rigid appliances, Smith's use of latex and other methods allowed actors to appear more natural even while wearing the most severe makeups. He painstakingly added decades to actor Dustin Hoffman in Little Big Man and F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus, for which he won an Oscar.

Smith also created the shocking visage of Dorian Gray in a 1961 TV movie, Hoffman's Ratso Rizzo character in Midnight Cowboy and Robert De Niro's mohawked Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver.

For The Exorcist, Smith shocked moviegoers with the transformation of a young girl possessed by the devil and the physical effect of spewing green vomit. The makeups took five hours before shooting even began.

"It wasn't until I worked on The Exorcist that there was even a call for the kind of change on camera that was required,'' Smith said later. The biggest challenge, he recalled, was trying to make look "mean this sweet little apple-cheeked girl.''

Smith began makeup work while at Yale. He served 15 years as NBC's first makeup director and worked on productions ranging from Dark Shadows (he memorably aged Jonathan Frid's Barnabas Collins), The Sunshine Boys and Marathon Man,

"To say Dick Smith was a genius in our craft is an understatement,'' said makeup artist and film historian Michael F. Blake. "He, like (Lon) Chaney, (Jack) Pierce and others, was a pioneer. He was a very giving teacher. Willing to help anyone who asked.''

In 2009, Smith received a lifetime achievement Academy Award. Director J.J. Abrams said then that many would ask Smith "How did you do that? It was Dick Smith who gave us the answers."

"Video Nasties : Draconian Days" - UK DVD review.

Given such a thorough examination of the events that lead up to the UK having one of the most stringent censorship regimes in the western world, in the 2010 documentary “Video Nasties : Moral Panic”, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it covered pretty much everything. But, you’d be wrong.

Picking up were the previous documentary left off, “Video Nasties : Draconian Days", by Jake West and Marc Morris, looks at how censorship in the UK affected the availability of various horror titles after the video recordings act came into effect ,and looks at just how scissor happy the BBFC were under James Ferman, up until his departure in 1999.

Many infamous film titles that were heavily censored, like “Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer”, or were ‘unofficially’ banned on video via the back door, like "The Exorcist” or “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, are examined, showing the problems Ferman had with them, as well as looking at many of the infamous news stories which the press falsely attributed to being influenced by screen violence. Such as the Hungerford massacre and the killing of James Bulger and how these either directly, or indirectly, influenced decision making at the BBFC.

However, the most enjoyable part of the documentary for me was showing how all this censorship simply lead to a huge underground black market of people dealing in uncut imports and dodgy bootlegs, selling through fanzines, carefully worded ads in horror magazines and at illicit movie fairs in and around London. I particularly enjoyed this section as I used to attend similar movie fairs back in the 90s and used to get a real buzz out of spending a small fortune on imported VHS horror tapes.

As with the previous documentary, the stories are told through a series of interviews with various media academics, like Professor Julian Petley, together with current and former BBFC examiners, such as Craig lapper and Carol Topolski. Which are interspersed with vintage news articles, containing interviews with the pro-censorship brigade such as MP Graham Bright, who introduced the Video Recordings Act and David Alton, who very nearly succeeded  in getting all 15 and 18 classified movies banned from video shelves in the 1990s.

These are of particular interest as it shows you just how vociferous the pro-censorship brigade were and how quickly anyone trying to oppose them was shouted down. Indeed, there’s one particularly funny TV debate in which “Death Wish” director Michael Winner goes up against morality campaigner Mary Whitehouse in a studio where the audience are all, rather bizarrely, dressed up as Rambo, which is worth buying the disc for alone.

It also features interviews with the likes of film critics and authors Kim Newman and Alan Jones, directors Alex Chandon (Bad Karma, Cradle of Fear) and Christopher Smith (Creep) and many others, who put their slant on how all this censorship affected die hard horror fans like themselves.

Unless you were a horror fan (like myself) who lived through that era, you may find a lot of the things that went on with the BBFC back then hard to believe. Especially given the relatively liberal nature of the board these days. So this documentary will certainly be an eye-opener for many younger horror fans, as well as being a nice nostalgia piece for older fans like myself.

As with the previous documentary, this is a 3-disc set, which comes loaded with extras.

On Disc one, you get the documentary. Plus video cover scans of the original 72 films that the authorities tried to ban and prosecute as video nasties under Section 2 of the obscene publications act (these were also included on the previous documentary), as well as cover scans of 82 pre-cert films known as “section 3 titles”, which were a secondary list of films that the govt felt were liable to contravene section 3 of the obscene publication act (more on this in a moment). Also included is a “Fanzine” section., which is essentially a cover scan gallery of various fanzines that dedicated fans used to put out in those pre-internet days, telling you all about where to get the good stuff from.

On Discs 2 and 3 you’ll find trailers for a number of pre-cert films from the aforementioned “Section 3” list. There’s a nice little intro explaining all about what Section 3 titles were on disc 2, but to summerise, whereas the original Nasties were prosecuted under section 2 of the OPA, these were felt by the Director of Public Prosecutions to be in breach of the less serious section 3. Which meant the police could confiscate them, but not prosecute and the dealer or distributor, who’d had them seized, could contest them in a magistrates court, though few bothered.

There are 82 trailers split over 2 discs, which includes the likes of “Rosemary’s Killer”, “Happy Birthday to me”, “Last Cannibal World”, “Friday the 13th”, “Zombies – Dawn of the Dead” and many more, which all come with specially filmed intros from some of the critics and journalists who took part in the documentary. Such as Alan Jones and Kim Newman, together with Academics such as Drs Karen Oughton and Patricia MacCormack and even a few genre fans like Justin Kerswell who runs the Hysteria website, who all provide some interesting insight into the films and why they got included on the list.

I should also mention there are apparently 4 special “Easter Egg” features on disc 1, but I’m damned if I can find them, so if anyone manages to work out how to access them from any of the menus, please let me know.

This an excellent companion piece to the original documentary, which will definitely appeal to old and new horror fans alike. This release is strictly limited to 6,666 copies, so if you’re a serious horror fan, be sure to pick your copy up quick.

Frizzi 2 Fulci: Halloween at the Barbican

Immerse yourself in the chilling atmospheres of Fabio Frizzi’s brilliantly disturbing scores, accompanied by film scenes which will have you hiding under your seat.

One of the undisputed masters of Italian horror soundtracks, Fabio Frizzi celebrates his special partnership with the late ‘Godfather of Gore’, director Lucio Fulci. Joined by the F2F Orchestra, the Alauda String Quartet and vocalists, he performs his dark and brooding scores to worldwide splatter sensations like "Zombie Flesh Eaters" (1979) and other blood soaked epics such as "Seven Notes In Black", "The Beyond", "City Of The Living Dead", "Manhattan Baby" and more.

Highly influential to this day, Fabio Frizzi is one of the most celebrated Italian film composers, alongside names such as Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Goblin and Gianni Ferrio. Numerous musicians ranging from Boards Of Canada and Wu Tang’s RZA, through to the new synth breed of Umberto and Zombi have cited him as a major inspiration. Quentin Tarantino is also a long-term admirer and deployed the theme from "Seven Notes In Black" for "Kill Bill".

"Zomboobies" trailer

No idea if this is actually a real film, or one of those faux trailers, but I like the look of this...

"XMOOR" to Premiere at Frightfest.

A beast, baying for blood, deep on the moors is startled when two documentary filmmakers and their expert tracker attempt once and for all to prove the existence of this elusive moorland creature. Only our trio are not prepared for what they are actually about to discover as XMOOR explodes onto screens on August 25, 2014 at this year’s FILM4 FrightFest.

With their sights set on a £25,000 reward promoted by a local newspaper, American documentary makers Georgia and Matt head to Exmoor in North Devon to film the fabled ‘beast’ supposedly slinking through the remote terrain. Setting up a forest camp with an experienced tracker harbouring his own dark secrets, the trio fix 42 cameras to the trees and rocks, linked back to a computer nerve centre where nothing should go unnoticed as they take turns to keep watch throughout the night.

But, As darkness settles, their plans are thrown into disarray as they stumble over the body of a dead girl in a clearing and they are horrified to realise that she isn’t alone. They are surrounded by rotting bodies of dead girls. The realisation soon dawns that they are in the lair of a beast alright, but not one of the four-legged variety. They have discovered a serial killer’s dumping ground and soon they become his most wanted prey.

Written and directed by emerging filmmaker Luke Hyams, the film stars MELIA KREILING (Guardians Of The Galaxy), NICK BLOOD (TV’s Babylon) and MARK BONNAR (TV’s Psychoville).

Interview with the Bunnyman - Joshua Lang

The Bunnyman himself Joshua Lang ‘hopped’ over to chat about the second in Carl Lindbergh’s horrifically humorous and bloody brilliant Bunnyman movies.

How hot is that dang suit? For some reason you always seem to be shooting these movies during the summer.

The suit itself isn't that bad but the killer is that helmet, recycling a lot of your own air just like sticking your head under sheets. It gets hot real quick long takes are very difficult, as well the physical scenes where Bunyan dies a lot of Action. But you have to embrace the suck, make it happen.

If you could have Bunnyman star in a “Vs.” movie, who would you want to see him take on?

Okay that's a f****** awesome question….Bunnyman vs the Leprechaun. I know that I can definitely picture that one coming out. I wonder who has bigger anger issues?

“Bunnyman 2” (released as "Bunnyman Massacre" in the US and "Bunnyman Ressurection" in the UK) is said to be bloodier than the original. Was that the intention?

Most definitely we tried hard to make it bigger and better movie. Where the big difference is you're fine bunnyman Massacre is that during the first film we realize that the bad guys were more interesting characters. So and Bunnymen master you find majority of the time we spend with bunnyman and his good friend Joe as they terrorize people along the countryside.

I believe you wear more hats on this movie than simply playing the lead role?

I'm a filmmaker first I definitely had my hands full fixing issues and putting out fires as they rise. The Bunnyman productions are usually pretty interesting and there's lots of behind-the-scenes craziness.

And I'm usually on standby for any questions or problems that may need to be solved I'm usually quick with the ideas.

Is acting the first love?

Acting is definitely what got me into this industry. I started off with high school theatre moving on to do in college theatre and even did some theatre when I was stationed in Germany during my tour with the United States Army. My first real job was at Six Flags marine world, I scored a role to become a part of Alice Cooper brutal Planet theme haunted house. I played a character who had recently escaped from mental institution, lip sing two Alice Cooper songs before being sacrificed by getting my head chopped off by 10 foot guillotine all to entertain the queue line for the haunted house. After acting however, Photography a big hobby during my time in the service. So after my tour it only seemed logical to pursue film.

Have you a favorite slasher movie?

The Friday the 13th films were really really scary but I believe a Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite. I just love the performances in the character that Robert England brings. It's something about the humor with the character that really brings out the best in being bad.

Is Carl Lindbergh an ‘actor’s director’? Is he Ok with improvisation?

I do a lot of improvisation and encourage other actors that work with Carl to do so. if he likes what you do he will tell you to keep it. Sometimes he doesn't like something I do, and he will definitely let you know. I love the fact I have the ability to get into the role, it is a fun character to play.

"Video Nasties : Definitive Guide Part 2" - Out Now!!!!!

Released to tie in with the 30th Anniversary of the Video Recordings Act, July 1984 and limited to 6,666 individually numbered sets, each comes with postcards featuring the DPP Section 3 cover art and Graham Humphrey’s original cover art.

The Video Nasties continue to be a major source of interest to this day, and after the crtical and sales success of Video Nasties 1, comes the return! Video Nasties 2 is released to tie-in with the establishment of the Video Recordings Act.

Disc One: “Video Nasties: Draconian Days”
Nucleus Films' critically acclaimed follow-up documentary to 'VIDEO NASTIES: MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP AND VIDEOTAPE' (2010) from Director Jake West and producer Marc Morris who continue to uncover the shocking story of home entertainment following the introduction of the 1984 Video Recordings Act. The United Kingdom was plunged into a new Dark Age of the most restrictive censorship, where the horror movie became the bloody eviscerated victim of continuing dread created by self-aggrandizing moral guardians, and the film charts the consequences of this, including subversive social culture that sprung up around it. With fascinating interviews and more jaw dropping archive footage, get ready to reflect and rejoice on the passing of a turbulent time.

Discs Two and Three: "The Section 3 List"
Presents the official additional 82 titles that were officially designated under "Section 3" of the Obscene Publications Act by the Director of Public Prosecutions. These titles were liable for seizure and forfeiture by the police, removed from sale or hire and then destroyed; although they were not ultimately prosecuted. This amazing list was discovered whilst researching legal paperwork for the original "VIDEO NASTIES: THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE" and finally clears up why so many additional titles were historically considered to be "Video Nasties".

Titles include: 'Blood Lust' , 'Brutes & Savages', 'Cannibals', 'Dead Kids', 'Deep Red', 'Death Weekend', 'Demented', 'Eaten Alive', 'Headless Eyes', 'Hell Prison', 'Love Butcher', 'Mark of the Devil', 'Massacre Mansion', Savage Terror', 'Scream for Vengeance' 'Suicide Cult , "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre', 'Xtro' and 'Zombie Holocaust'.

Every shocking Section 3 title is presented with its original trailer and a newly filmed featurette that includes a wide range of notable genre journalists and acclaimed media academics that explore and uncover the sordid history of each release.

"Scavenger" - Kickstarter Campaign

The producers behind the forthcoming horror film "Scavenger" are appealing for help to get their project off the ground.

Described as "A Nouveaux-Gothic chamber piece", ‘Scavenger’; as the title suggests, is about a scavenger hunt; but with almost other-worldly origins.

The central object of the story, the ‘Freya box’, with an odd; almost supernatural past, requests an item, in return for an incredibly addictive; but brief experience known as ‘enlightenment’; pitting two players against each other and pushing them to the very limits of their sanity.

As the game progresses, the requests grow increasingly vampiric in nature; the pursuit of which draws the worst side out of our characters.

Written by Lewis Jordan and Jason Smith (the former also serving as director), they have been joined by Lucinda Rhodes and her fabulous production company Hawken-Rhodes and have been instrumental in securing an award-wining cast and crew.

Now, to get the project off the ground they need funding in order to secure...

 • Location Rental
 • Props
 • Costums
 • Paying [and feeding] the cast and crew

So, in order to acheive this, they've launched a Kickstarter campaign, and are appealing for your help.

For more information on how to get involved and benefits that come with the various levels of investment, visit the Scavenger Kickstarter Page.

"Killers" in UK cinemas THIS Friday

Out at UK Cinemas next Friday, (18th July), "KILLERS" is a stylish thriller from "The Raid" producer/ Director Gareth Evans and directed by the hugely talented ‘Mo Brothers’ (Macabre). Which sees the explosive meeting of two serial killers with contrasting, and sadistic, styles of murder

Nomura is a good looking and stylish man in his early thirties who lives a successful life in Tokyo, Japan. Girls are drawn to him, something he uses to his advantage as none of them realise the sinister truth behind the clean-cut façade.

Nomura has been leaving a legacy of violent murders that he immortalises through video clips posted on a public video website. He thrives off of the fact that millions are witnessing his work through the virally spread videos.

Thousands of miles away from him, in a whole different world, lives Bayu, a disgraced investigative journalist living in a violent and unstable Jakarta, Indonesia. As Bayu’s life is hit by the nadir of failures, Nomura’s videos trigger his dark side as he starts to record his own brand of “justified” killings. Nomura’s seemingly confident and controlled charm starts to peel when his ego is wounded by the fact that Bayu’s videos have reached a significant numbers of followers that could rival his own.

Complicating matters further is Nomura’s bizarre attraction towards a traumatised young florist Hisae. Bayu himself starts to sink deeper into a spiral of violence; obsessed with bringing down one of the country’s biggest and most corrupt politicians, but during his bloody rampage he doesn’t realise the repercussions towards his young daughter, Elly.

When the rivalry between Nomura and Bayu becomes an uncontrollable psychosis, the two of them must face each other in one of the most exhilarating film finales in years.

The film will be playing at selected UK cinemas this Friday, the 18th of July, and will be released to DVD and BD September 1st.

Ti West's "The Sacrament" on UK DVD NOW!!!!

From acclaimed writer/director Ti West (THE INNKEEPERS, THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL) and master of horror Eli Roth (THE LAST EXORCISM, HOSTEL, CABIN FEVER), "THE SACRAMENT" examines the last days in the life of a religious cult via West’s unique brand of smart, slow-burn terror.

THE SACRAMENT follows two ill-fated Vice Media correspondents as they set out to document their friend’s journey to find his missing sister. Travelling outside of the United States to an undisclosed location, they are welcomed into the world of remote commune “Eden Parish,” a self-sustained rural utopia, comprised of nearly two hundred members.

At the center of this small, religious, socialist community is a mysterious leader known only as “Father.” As their friend reunites with his sister, it becomes apparent to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems and underneath the supposed harmony lies a dark and terrifying truth. What started as just another documentary shoot soon becomes a race to escape with their lives.

Artfully blending old-school 1970’s-style horror with a chilling psychological study of religious fanaticism, THE SACRAMENT relentlessly builds into an atmosphere of engulfing dread that gets under the skin and stays there.

The film is out now on UK DVD from House releasing.
