"After Midnight" - a review

I’m sure many of you will be familiar with the works of Fred Olen Ray, the man who gave us “Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers”, “Scalps” and more recently “Hatfields and McCoys : Bad Blood”. Well his new film “After Midnight” is hitting VOD streaming outlets in the US this month and I was given the chance to take a sneak peak at it.

Newscaster Constance Turner (Catherine Annette – Silent but Deadly) is shocked to hear about the death of her sister, Ann, who was brutally gunned down outside the seedy strip club where she worked.

With the police unable to find the killer, she decides to go undercover  and poke around at the club to see if anyone might know anything, by taking a job as a stripper. But when a couple of other dancers and some of the customers from the club also end up dead, she finds there are no shortage of suspects.

More of a dark erotic thriller than a horror, there’s not really much to review as this is for the most part a T & A film, with large portions of the movies running time taken up showing the various dancers getting their kit off for the camera. Indeed, the film was kind of a bizarre cross between an Agatha Christy novel and a low budget version of “Showgirls” (make of that what you will).

Richard Greico (21 Jump Street) has a minor role as a psychologist and former model and occasional B-movie actress Tawny Kitaen (Witchboard, The Perils of Gwendoline and the dancer in numerous ‘Whitesnake’ music videos from the mid 80s) turns up in a supporting role as the strip club owner.

Not an outstanding movie, but one that passes the time relatively well if you’re in the mood for some soft porn!

The film should be available from US VOD outlets from Oct 28.
